Barnes, K. C. He and She. Penguin Books, 1962. An account of sexuality as it presents to the ’teenager which takes account of present day realities. Especially suitable for adolescents whose parents have difficulty in discussing such matters with them.

Barnes, K. C. and Barnes, G. F. Sex, Friendship and Marriage. An account of the physiology of reproduction and related matters.

Cole, W. G. Sex and Love in the Bible. Hodder and Stoughton, 1960. A thorough and lucid exposition which helps to make Biblical concepts relevant to modern situations.

De Beauvoir, S. The Second Sex. Four Square, 1960. A serious yet amusing treatise on the place of women in society, in particular on the significance and consequences of equality between the sexes.

Ellis, Havelock. Psychology of Sex. Pan Books, 1959. A classic of the early literature: one of the first systematic studies but out of date in terminology and conclusions (here reprinted). Ford, C. S. and Beach, F. A. Patterns of Sexual Behaviour. Harper, 1951. A learned but readable survey of sexual conduct placed in biological and anthropological perspective with an account of the physiology of reproduction and the influence of hormones on behaviour, (out of date in parts.)

British Medical Association, 1962. Getting Married. A useful booklet by various authors covering varied and important aspects of its subject.

Studdert-Kennedy, G. A. The Warrior, the Woman and the Christ. Hodder and Stoughton, 1928. A work which draws attention to the masculinity in women and femininity in men, and relates these to Christ’s teaching and personality.

Sexual Behaviour of the Human Male. W. B. Saunders, 1948.

Sexual Behaviour of the Human Female. W. B. Saunders, 1953. The most comprehensive surveys of human sexual conduct yet attempted: a mine of biological information and not yet seriously challenged as to the major findings, though largely based on replies from U.S. respondents only. Macmurray, John. Reason and Emotion. Faber, 1962.

Plato. Symposium. Penguin, 1951. The classic treatise on love relationships in all aspects, especially on the spiritual aspects of homosexuality, as understood in Athens of that time. Proust, M. (Trans. Scott Moncrieff). Remembrance of Things Past. Chatto and Windus, 1949, Vol. VII. A sympathetic and moving account of a boy’s feelings towards adults and in particular towards the aloof, yet adored, mother.

Renault, Mary. The Charioteer. Longmans, 1953. An unusually perceptive novel about a young homosexual, set in the 1939-45 war.
